Orthodontist/Dentist

Haven’t had the opportunity to blog about things lately.. There are a few things to catch up on.
First
We took Ali to the orthodontist last week before they left with ex. We have decided after all the research and discussions with her speech therapist on the bionater. she was very nervous about what they were going to do to her.. I’m not exaggerating that she asked “so, What are they going to do to me mom?” over 30 times in 4 days including twice on the way to the appointment. I got really tired of repeating the scenario to her and finally just started turning it around asking her to repeat what I’d told her back to me. I knew that they’d be doing some molds of her mouth and so I’d prepared her for that, however because her case is so complex they wanted extra moldings, another round of x-ray’s AND photographs of her mouth for case study purposes. She had to do FOUR molds! Poor thing, she did such a great job. I would have gagged after the first one.. She’ll most likely be written up somewhere for educational purposes after all is said and done.. She thinks that is pretty cool.
I really like her Orthodontist. His office, and staff are very nice, and all so personable.
The Bionater is made back east so it will be another 2 weeks before its ready for us to go back in for the final fitting. She’s excited about it, although I’m not sure she really knows what it entrails….
Ali will have to wear it 24 hours a day and will only take it out to eat.. I’m very nervous about that part as it is an $800.00 piece of plastic that is going to be lying around when its not safely in her mouth. I’m going to buy her a very attractive retainer holder and glue it to the table (I’m just kidding). I was thinking however that maybe this year we’ll forgo hot lunch altogether and only do cold lunch IN A LUNCH BOX so that she can store it in there while she eats and hopefully not take the risk of getting thrown out with a lunch tray.. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Her Dr said that she will most likely talk funny for a few weeks because its one big piece top and bottom unlike a regular retainer and will be holding her tongue in a position that its not been used to her whole life. We’ll be seeing her speech therapist regularly again too after she’s got it in her mouth.
Second
Mathew had his 6-month Dental visit last week as well. He loved the office because right in the waiting room is a children’s room full of fun things to play with. Even better the office is sea themed and so there are fish and seagulls everywhere… two of Mattie’s favorite things (not necessarily seagulls but birds of course) I was concerned because every time I brush his teeth his mouth bleeds. His lip is attached to his gums in three places on the top ( I know, weird huh?) It’s hard to brush his top teeth because I’m quite literally brushing through his lip and gums to get to his teeth and I don’t feel like I’m getting them very well. When he smiles his top teeth rarely show because his lips don’t come up. Anyway I was worried that I was hurting him making him bleed every time but his Dentist assured me that it was just fine. Its much the same as being “tongue tied” like many kids are underneath. I asked about detaching them but he said that it would require sedation and typically Dentists like to wait until their permanent teeth come in because often it will resolve itself then. I guess I can consider it a blessing because the fact that the tips of his top teeth are discolored bothers me quite a bit, so having them not show might be a good thing? Otherwise his teeth look great. They didn’t clean them because he was already feeling tortured. He looked so tiny in the big chair; I wish I ‘d had my camera.
Third
WE are missing the girls like crazy. It’s been a week and a half since they’ve been gone. The house is so quiet and I hate not knowing how they are or what they’ve been doing. They come home this week and we get them for two weeks. I’m positive that I should be enjoying the quiet but I just miss them. This is also the first year that we haven’t done any major projects while they’ve been gone so there hasn’t been much distraction.

Side note; I'm at work today another long 12 hour Sunday.
Taylor called to describe to me the scene he just watched in the kitchen.. Mattie came in pulled off his diaper, stuck his tummy out, peed on the floor and then leaned down and wiped it up with his dry diaper telling Taylor “Ewww”.

That funny Mattie-boy!! At least he cleaned up his little mess. :)

I think glueing a container to the table is a great idea! Maybe points for keeping it in on random check points through out the day? Retainer cases glued to her hand?
